Job Description

Specialization: Interactive or Theory or Animation & Game Design and Development

Job Summary:

  1. The post provides an opportunity for an enthusiastic early career academic to gain a wide range of experience in learning, teaching and assessment practice in the field of Digital Media.
  2. Under the supervision and guidance of a senior academic member of staff, to contribute to the delivery of teaching and facilitation and to provide academic support for groups of students.
  3. All role holders at this level will be expected to undertake a combination of teaching, scholarship and/or enterprise activity, along with various administrative tasks as part of their role and to contribute and engage with the University’s international agenda where appropriate. Typically, roles will incorporate expertise in Digital Media practice including: web and app development, creative technologies, interface development and creative coding/programming. Tasks will be in line with the indicators outlined in the Person Specification. 
  4. All role holders at this level will be expected to undertake a combination of teaching, scholarship and/or enterprise activity, along with various administrative tasks as part of their role and to contribute and engage with the University’s international agenda where appropriate. Typically, roles will incorporate expertise in Graphic Design. Tasks will be in line with the indicators outlined in the Person Specification.

  6. Under the supervision and guidance of a senior academic member of staff, to contribute to the assessment of one or more modules.
  7. Under the supervision and guidance of a senior academic member of staff, to act as an Academic Personal Tutor to students.

Main duties and responsibilities:

  1. Under the supervision and guidance of a senior academic member of staff, and using established curriculum, to deliver academic support services to students undertaking undergraduate or post-graduate modules and to other client groups of the School.
  2. Under the supervision and guidance of a senior academic member of staff, and using established curriculum, to deliver seminars and tutorials, workshops, computer laboratory classes or other small group learning activities and/or deliver skills instruction to individuals or small groups and/or deliver support to students on placement.
  3. Under the direction of senior academic staff, mark and moderate, as appropriate, assignments, exam scripts or other assessment materials to pre-set requirements/protocols and/or mark and assess students’ skills through practical assignments and class tests to pre-set requirements.
  4. Under the guidance and support of senior academic staff, seek ways of improving students’ learning by reviewing effectiveness and identifying areas of improvement drawing upon feedback from various sources.
  5. Under the guidance and support of senior academic staff to lead/support in small special project areas e.g. managing the School’s social media and/or web presence, student field trips and guest lectures.
  6. Provide appropriate guidance and support to students, and ensure, where required, that student records are properly maintained, including marks lists, attendance records etc.
  7. Under guidance and support from senior academic staff, contribute to the academic tutoring of students within the School.
  8. Under guidance and support from senior academic staff, contribute to the development and delivery of consultancy projects and/or professional learning and development programmes and/or knowledge exchange events.
  9. Ensure a safe working environment and abide by University health and safety policies and practices and to observe the University’s Equal Opportunities policy and Dignity and Respect policy at all times.
  10. Commence/continue to study for an appropriate Postgraduate qualification.

AND such other duties as are within the scope and spirit of the job purpose, the title of the post and its grading.
Supervision Received:
Works under the guidance and with support of, more senior academic colleagues including the Head of School, Course Directors, Module Leaders, and others. 

Line manager will be a senior member of the School.

Skills

Education/Qualifications:
Honor's degree in an appropriate subject Or (if from Professional practice background) an Honor's Degree and / or appropriate professional qualification and membership

  1.  Excellent knowledge of academic theory and/or practice in a relevant discipline, such as Design & Media
  2. Professional/industry/ Higher  Education experience in the following: 
  • Full stack web development HTML/CSS/JavaScript + Database.
  • Native or Web-based App Development
  • Interactive Multimedia Design skills.
  • Creative Coding (Processing.org, OpenFrameworks etc.)
  • User Experience (UX) Design
  • Confident in using and installing a range of CMS (e.g. Wordpress.org, Joomla, Drupal etc.)
  • Managing web hosting server space / domain names etc. and associated technologies sFTP, ssh, etc.

Additional experience:

  • Experience of teaching and/or student support within Higher Education.
  • Relevant industry experience.
  • Experience of E-learning technologies
  • Experience of LAMP, Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP
  • Basic knowledge of Python
  • Understanding of creation of in 360/VR/AR.
  • Knowledge of Game Engines Unity/Unreal/Blender.
  • Experience with Microcomputer programming, such as Rasperry Pis, Arduinos, etc.
  • Professionally certified instructor status for relevant software including Adobe Certified Expert, Apple Certified Pro covering a range of software packages.
  • Experience of development workflows, such as Agile, Scrum, Kanban
  • Video/Film Production, Video Editing, Television studios, lighting.

  • Knows how to use Adobe suite, Unity, Blender, Maya, Animate, Coding by processing, Awareness of Arduino and Html.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English.

Other Requirements:

  • Willingness to undertake academic activities in the evening when necessary, and participate in occasional weekend activities such as recruitment days.
  • A willingness to travel local, nationally and internationally as required to undertake academic and related activities.
  • Ability to contribute to the development of the curriculum to include international and intercultural experiences
